Craigslist probably thought it was best to remove this section on a Friday night without announcement or fanfare. Amid mounting public criticism and demands from Attorney Generals from 17 States, the site quietly began removing the Adult Section across the country tonight. In some cities, the section is gone altogether while in other cities the word censored appears over the section. There is no mention of it over at the Craigslist blog and attempts to contact the site for a comment went unanswered.
There has already been a strong reaction from across the country. This article is among the first to announce the change in the site and within the first hour, it generated over 900 page views.
Obviously this is a hot topic for both sides of the fence. Over at MyRedBook.com, a site catering to those looking for adult services, reactions are have been swift. Some have speculated this move will only drive sex workers to invade other parts of the Craigslist site such as Casual Encounters or Creative Gigs. It’s too early to tell if this will happen or what the site will do if it does happen.
